Common Scams You Can Avoid

PHISHING ALERT!

What is Phishing? Phishing is when crooks send you an email that looks like it came from PayPal or eBay but it actually links to the crooks website. Has someone stolen your password to your PayPal account and transferred out your money? Did they break into someone elses account and send you money which was later taken back by PayPal? This happened because someone clicked a link in an email message and they THOUGHT they were typing their PayPal password in the PayPal.com site but they were actually typing it in a crooks site. If this has happened to you once, DO NOT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN!!!! It is so easy to prevent

1. NEVER click a link in any email message.

2. Install the MyLittleMole.com toolbar to be alerted if you are tricked into going to a fake PayPal or eBay Website.

3. NEVER click a link in ANY email Message.

4. If you receive a message from eBay or PayPal, DONT CLICK A LINK IN THE EMAIL

5. I cant say it enough, DO NOT CLICK LINKS IN ANY EMAIL, NOT NOW, NOT EVER.

PayPal will never send you an email threatening to disable your account if you do not click a link.

These fake messages may say things like

"Where is my order, contact me immediately or I am reporting you to eBay" When you have not sold anything to this person

or

"Your account will be disabled if you do not update your information immediately"

or

"Congratulations! PayPal has successfully charged $25 to your credit card. Your order tracking number is 1Z103839, and your item will be shipped within three business days.To see details please click this link."

Never respond to any of these emails and NEVER click any links in any of them. Dont click any links in ANY email EVER.

If you receive an email like the below it is a FAKE, do not click any links and do not reply to it. Any email from eBay or PayPal that does not have YOUR real name at the top is a FAKE FAKE FAKE

These types of messages are how crooks obtain passwords and login names for eBay and PayPal which they then use to post fake ads on eBay and to steal money from PayPal accounts.

Western Union, and other payment services

Never send anyone an auction payment by Western Union, it says on the western union site not to do this so stop it. Crooks use other payment services and sometimes they setup their own websites that look like payment services.

You can find a list of approved eBay payment services and ones eBay does not allow on the Approved Payment Services page at eBay. Click the SHOW link in the gray box to see a list near the bottom of the page.

Escrow Scams

Fake payment service sites and fake escrow sites are big business for crooks. They setup a nice looking website and then post a fake auction for an expensive item like a 4-wheeler, then they tell the buyer they want to use an escrow service and point them to a the fake website. The buyer sends money and never hears from the fake escrow company or seller again. Never use an escrow service other than escrow.com for eBay purchases.

Counterfeit Scams

Crooks will buy an expensive item and then send a counterfeit check or money order. They will have the item sent to someone who knows nothing about the scam and have that person forward their mail so the seller never knows who he is really shipping to.

Sometimes the crook will send more than the amount due. Any buyer that sends more money than they owe is a crook! If you sell an item for $100 and receive a $1,000 cashier's check, then the buyer asks you to wire the overpayment back because he has an emergency, he is a crook. The counterfeit check will bounce and you will be out all of the money and the goods if you ship them. Dont fall for this.

High/Low Price Rip Offs

Beware of any items with extremely low prices for their value or high prices for their value. If you see a new laptop computer that sells for $1000 and someone is offering it for $500 buy it now, the auction was posted by a crook because no one would sell it for half the value. If you see a used car with a blue book value of $5000 listed with an opening bid of $50,000 that is an auction by a crook. The crook is hoping people will contact him directly to tell him the value and then he will offer to sell the item outside of eBay and claim the listing price was a typo.

There are hundreds of scams in the book at ScamsAndScoundrels.com and that is where I learned about many of the one's on this site.
